CBD beverage trends: What’s new?

  • From candy to face serums, it seems like cannabidiol (CBD) is in everything these days, and an ever-growing category for this all-star ingredient is non-alcoholic CBD beverages.
  • Considering the huge trend for functional drinks, these CBD beverage trends make perfect sense.
  • For curious consumers, these CBD-infused drinks are easily accessible and the dosage is controlled, making it all the more attractive to mainstream consumers.

Relaxation without the “high”

The FDA is quick to highlight the distinction between marijuana or hashish and CBD—the key ingredient in CBD drink trends. The latter is a single compound from the Cannabis sativa plant. It doesn’t create a “high.” Instead, it works naturally with the body to create a feeling of wellness. It can be useful for a variety of ailments or concerns, including anxiety, pain relief, improved sleep, better focus and improved mood. Meanwhile, Marijuana and Hashish are made from the parts of the plant that contain Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the psychoactive compound that makes people feel a “high.”

What the CBD beverage data says

In the U.S. in the past year, NielsenIQ’s CBD beverage data reveals that sales of CBD beverages have reached $19.0 million. Although it’s still a relatively niche segment, sales have increased by 42.2% when compared to one year before, outpacing total beverage sales, which are up by 21.9%. The market is growing quickly, as sales were at $13.4 million a year ago and $9.2 million two years ago.

From seltzers to teas: CBD drink trends

Many drinks that have existed for centuries already contain compounds designed to alter mood or bring specific benefits for body and mind. For example, the caffeine in coffee boosts alertness and concentration, while the sedative effects of a Friday night glass of red wine can help with relaxation after a hectic week.

In many new CBD drink trends, manufacturers have combined CBD with ingredients such as caffeine for different spins on what they offer. These new combinations also allow them to create beverages that are designed to be drunk at different times of the day. For example, a combination of caffeine and CBD early in the morning can offer an energy boost.
