Gift of Insight UK (Part 9): Roaming Home for Christmas: How eSIMs Are Changing Holiday Travel

The holiday season is here! For many of us, Christmas isn’t just about cozy nights and twinkling lights—it’s also about packing our bags and heading off on festive adventures. Whether you’re strolling through snowy European streets or chasing winter sun on a tropical beach, one thing is certain: staying connected matters.

Enter eSIMs, the digital alternative to physical SIM cards. Providers like Airalo and Holafly are making it easier than ever to stay online without the hassle of swapping SIMs or paying surprise roaming fees. But how is this tech shaping holiday travel in 2025? Let’s unwrap the insights.

Here are some key takeaways.

Awareness Is Growing, But Knowledge Is Limited

Our latest data shows that 68% of UK consumers have heard of eSIMs, but only 15% feel they know a lot about them. Interestingly, the 25–34 age group leads the way, with 28% claiming strong understanding. Younger consumers are clearly driving adoption.

Why Travelers Love eSIMs

The top reason for using eSIMs? Switching networks easily (32%). But close behind is using an eSIM abroad (29%). For holidaymakers, that means no more hunting for local SIM cards or worrying about surprise roaming charges.

Operators Still Dominate Roaming

Despite the buzz, traditional roaming isn’t going anywhere just yet. Over half of UK holidaymakers in the past six months either had roaming included in their tariff (32%) or paid extra to their operator (22%). Old habits die hard—but change is coming.

Non-EU Travelers Are Leading the Shift

Heading beyond Europe? You’re more likely to try an eSIM. 7% of UK travelers leaving the EU bought an eSIM, and a third of them chose Airalo. It’s a small but growing trend that could reshape how we connect abroad.

The Big Picture

With 18,562 UK consumers surveyed, including 8,534 holidaymakers, one thing is clear: eSIMs are on the rise, but there’s still work to do in educating travelers. As awareness grows, expect more people to ditch physical SIMs for a seamless, digital experience.
