GfK’s Map of the Month for February shows the regional distribution of single households in Germany in 2023.
Next week is Valentine’s Day – but with a share of 40.9 percent, single households are the most common household type in Germany, followed by multi-person households without children (30.0 percent) and multi-person households with children (29.1 percent). But where in Germany do most people live alone?
The latest GfK data on demographics shows that more than one in two people in the urban district of Regensburg live alone, accounting for 53.5 percent of the population. This puts the Upper Palatinate city almost 31 percent above the national average and in first place among all 400 districts. The urban districts of Passau (51.7 percent) and Flensburg (50.5 percent) follow in second and third place. Percentage-wise, the fewest single-person households are found in the rural district of Cloppenburg, where only 29.2 percent of all households are occupied by just one person.
