Map of the Month: GfK Retail Centrality, Germany 2023

GfK’s Map of the Month for November shows the regional distribution of retail centrality in Germany in 2023.

Retail centrality shows which regions benefit from above-average brick-and-mortar retail turnover thanks to an inflow of purchasing power and where, on the other hand, there is an outflow of purchasing power. The latest GfK study for Germany shows that Germans rarely shop where they live and that medium-sized towns in particular have an especially strong appeal to their surrounding areas. With a retail centrality of 223.0, the urban district of Zweibruecken with its outlet city is clearly in first place. The two urban districts of Straubing (198.3) and Kaiserslautern (191.1) follow in second and third place. Bringing up the rear is the rural district of Straubing-Bogen with a retail centrality of 62.3.
