Map of the Month: Retail share of private consumption, Europe 2023

GfK’s Map of the Month for August shows the retail share of private consumption in 31 European countries in 2023.

The retail share of private consumption is slowly returning to pre-pandemic levels in the European Union. In 2023, a decline was recorded for the second year in a row, meaning that EU citizens now only spend 33.9 percent of their money in retail. The highest share is in Hungary, where every second euro is spent in retail. In Germany, on the other hand, only just under 27 percent of consumer spending is made in the retail sector, putting Germany in last place in the EU.
